Culture of the Capital City Program
During the celebration of the Hue Arts Festival, there will be a hundred different traditional programs that the local government will organize. One of these is the Culture of the Capital City Program or Van Hien Kinh Ky. This program is a remarkable art show that consists of different elements, such as animation, music, poetry, chorus, and dance.
Usually, the show would depict different stories about Vietnam. For instance, during the Hue Festival in 2018, the show highlighted the construction of the capital, the unity of territorial integrity, and more.
Royal Banquet Program
The royal banquet program will be held at the palace grounds. It is here that you’ll find models walking around in traditional costumes. You’ll find models dressed as princes, princesses, palace maids, eunuchs, etc. Traditional games will also be held at the palace, which includes poetry quizzes and playing cards.
Visitors will also have the chance to witness the Imperial Art Shows that include a presentation of traditional plays and royal court music. Witnessing these shows is like traveling back in time. National Competition of Traditional Folk Art
During the Hue Arts Festival, there will be a national competition of the Hat Van or Chau Van. These are Northern Vietnam’s traditional folk arts that combine dancing and singing. Originated in the 16th century, the Hat Van is a combination of music and poetry that are performed with a variety of rhythms, instruments, tempos, and pauses. But the main musical instrument used for the performance is the dan nguyet, a moon-shaped flute. The National Competition of traditional folk art will also include a succession of special performances all throughout the day.
Street Performances
A festival would not be complete without street performances. Thus, during the Hue Arts Festival, visitors will be treated to different cultural performances in varying themes. In 2018, the theme was “Cultural Colors”, which also includes performances showcasing the different cultures around the world. Each group of dancers will be performing a dance and song donning traditional clothes depending on the country that they represent. These street performances are usually held at around 4 PM in the main streets of Hue.
Ao Dai Performance
Ao Dai is Vietnam’s national costume that some locals are still wearing up until this day. During the Hue Arts Festival, there will be traditional performances showcasing this traditional costume. It’s a costume worn during traditional ceremonies, such as the wedding. During the Ao Dai performance, hundreds of different types of Ao Dai will be showcased, from the traditional old-fashioned ones to the 19th-century designs with a modern twist.
Different models will be wearing these traditional costumes as they walk on the ramp to showcase these clothing. The models may include famous local stars and beauty queens representing the different designs of Ao Dai made by Vietnam’s top designers.
Kite Flying Festival
For travelers with small kids, don’t miss the chance to witness the Kite Flying Festival during the Hue Arts Festival. During this event, you’ll be treated to an amazing view of colorful kites flying in the sky that come in the form of birds, insects, and some mythical creatures. These kites are made of bamboo and covered with silk. The designs are usually hand painted and are truly amazing to watch up in the sky.
