2026–2027 Vietnam Travel Guide for Hong Kong & Canadian Citizens: Visas, Transport, and Entry Requirements

Vietnam—from the French colonial charm of Ho Chi Minh City and the sun-kissed beaches of Da Nang to a piping hot bowl of phở on the streets of Hanoi—remains a top travel destination for both Hong Kong and Canadian travelers. However, for Hong Kong citizens residing in Canada and those holding Canadian passports, the biggest question before departure is often: “How do I actually handle the visa?”

This guide is specifically tailored for Hong Kong SAR passport holders in Canada and Canadian citizens, detailing the latest 2026–2027 Vietnam visa policies, transportation options, and entry requirements to ensure a smooth trip whether you are departing from Vancouver, Toronto, or Hong Kong.

I. Do Canadian Citizens Need a Visa for Vietnam?

Answer: Yes. As of 2026, Vietnam has not implemented a comprehensive visa-exemption policy for Canadian passport holders. Whether for tourism, visiting family, or business, Canadian citizens must obtain a valid visa before departure. Canada is currently not on Vietnam’s list of 45-day visa-exempt countries.

⚠️ Important Reminder: Do not assume you can “figure it out upon arrival”—without a visa, the airline will not allow you to board the flight.

🏝️ The Only Exemption: Phú Quốc Island Phú Quốc is currently the only region in Vietnam that offers visa-free entry to Canadian passport holders for a stay of up to 30 days. You must meet all the following conditions:

  • Passport validity of at least 6 months.
  • Confirmed return ticket or a ticket to a third country.
  • Fly directly to Phú Quốc International Airport (PQC)—you cannot transit through mainland Vietnam.
  • The itinerary is limited to Phú Quốc Island only.

⚠️ Critical Trap: If you fly to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi first and then transfer to Phú Quốc, the visa exemption becomes invalid immediately, and you will be required to hold a full visa.

💼 APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) Holders If you hold a valid APEC Business Travel Card, you can enter mainland Vietnam visa-free for up to 90 days.

II. Do Hong Kong SAR Passport Holders (in Canada) Need a Visa?

Answer: Yes. Regardless of whether you are in Hong Kong, Canada, or anywhere else in the world, HKSAR passport holders must apply for a visa to enter Vietnam.

🏝️ Phú Quốc Visa Exemption: The same 30-day rule applies to HKSAR passport holders, subject to the same conditions (must fly directly to the island and remain there).

💼 APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC): Same as above, valid for up to 90 days in mainland Vietnam.

⚠️ Important Note for BNO Passport Holders: BNO (British National Overseas) passport holders also require a visa and cannot use the E-Visa. BNO holders must apply via the Visa on Arrival (VOA) route—obtaining an Approval Letter beforehand and collecting the visa sticker upon arrival at a Vietnamese airport.

💡 Tip: When applying for a visa, BNO holders must select “British National Overseas” in the nationality field; do not select “Hong Kong” or the standard “United Kingdom.”

III. 2026–2027 Visa Options

The E-Visa is the mainstream choice for Canadian and HKSAR passport holders in 2026. It is processed entirely online with no need to visit a consulate.

② Visa on Arrival (VOA)

⚠️ Important Update: The Vietnam VOA approval letter system for general E-Visa eligible citizens has changed. Canadian citizens should now use the E-Visa as the standard route. X. Visa Pitfalls (For Canadians & Hong Kong Citizens)

  • Canadians: Must apply for an E-Visa; the VOA system for you is effectively closed. Ensure French accents in your name match the passport MRZ exactly.
  • HKSAR Holders: Choose “Hong Kong” as nationality. Do not omit your Chinese name on the E-Visa form.
  • BNO Holders: You cannot use E-Visa; you must use the VOA path.
  • Everyone: Passport must be valid for 6 months from the date of departure from Vietnam. Ensure the port of entry matches the one on your visa.
