[April 2024 Update] Visa Exemption Agreement Between Vietnam – Mongolia

From March 6, 2024, the Agreement between the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Government of Mongolia on visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports, official passports, and ordinary passports signed on November 1, 2023, will take effect. The implementation of the Agreement marks an important step forward in strengthening cooperation, promoting immigration activities and exchanges between citizens of the two countries.

According to the Agreement, citizens of each Party holding diplomatic passports and official passports valid for at least six (06) months are exempt from visas when entering, exiting, transiting and staying in the country’s territory. The other party must not exceed ninety (90) days from the date of entry. Members of diplomatic missions, consulates, and international organizations of Vietnam and Mongolia and their relatives are exempt from visas when entering, residing, exiting, and transiting the territories of the two countries within throughout the working term.

Compared to before, visa exemption only applies to diplomatic and official passport holders. However, with this new Agreement, opportunities to move more freely have been opened for citizens of the two countries, especially those holding ordinary passports.

The new agreement stipulates that citizens holding ordinary passports valid for at least six (06) months are exempted from visas when entering, exiting, transiting and staying in the territory of the other Party for a period of no more than thirty (30) days from the date of entry, provided that the purpose of entry is not for income-generating activities.

In addition, the Agreement stipulates that citizens of one Party entering the other Party with the intention of residing longer than the above-mentioned period must apply for a visa in advance. This not only creates more favorable conditions for travel and exchanges between the two countries but also promotes bilateral trade and investment activities.

This new agreement aims to further strengthen the existing friendly relations between the two countries. When the Agreement takes effect, it will replace the Agreement between the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Government of Mongolia on travel conditions for citizens (signed on January 7, 2000).
