What is a connecting flight?
A connecting flight or a connecting flight is a flight with at least two flight segments, which means that to reach the final destination, passengers need to change flights to at least one stopover point.
For example, fly from Bangkok to Hong Kong and transit at Vietnam’s Tan Son Nhat Airport. First, fly from Bangkok to Tan Son Nhat Airport, then change flights to Hong Kong.
Many destinations do not have direct flights, and passengers are forced to pass through transit airports. However, many people also actively choose to change planes because the cost is often lower than a direct flight.
Depending on the specific situation, you can transfer to the same or a different Airline. In particular, it is more convenient for the same airline to transfer because checked baggage is usually transferred automatically.

Do I need a Vietnam visa to transit in Vietnam?
If you transit at Vietnam airport, you do not need a Vietnam transit visa under the following circumstances:
- You have a transfer ticket within 24 hours. You are not allowed to leave the international transfer area of the airport, and you have the documents required for your final destination (passport, visa, etc.).
- On the other hand, if your transit is more than 24 hours away from Vietnam, or you want to enter Vietnam while waiting, you must obtain a visa.
NOTED: For a Vietnamese visa should be clarified before the trip.
Vietnam said a visa is not required for those who transfer within 24 hours.
-> But if your two flights are different airlines, the first flight company will not let you board if you have no Vietnam visa because Vietnam is their final destination.
For example, you buy a ticket from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City from Vietnam Airlines;
Then you buy a ticket from Ho Chi Minh City to Hong Kong from Cathay Pacific.
Vietnam Airlines require you to provide a visa before boarding;
They don’t care if you just want to transit to Hong Kong.
->Therefore, in this case, you must apply for a visa in advance.
