Traveling has become much more popular in the past few years because of the fact that more people can afford it, flight prices are becoming cheaper, and social media definitely has a role in it. So if you feel like you’re missing out on the whole travel craze, and also want to venture outside of your comfort zone, it’s time to save up! But like everything, it’s easier said than done. So what should you do in order to be able to afford a trip abroad, or more specifically, to Vietnam?
Vietnam is one of the most visited countries in Southeast Asia and is an excellent destination for those who are on a stricter budget. Since Vietnam is an incredibly affordable country, you get a lot for your money. But even so, you’ll need to save up a bit of money. If you’re having a hard time figuring out how to afford traveling and saving money, read on to get some tips.
1. Get an extra job
Getting an extra job will definitely boost your economy and you’ll be able to save money faster. There are plenty of ways to get online jobs these days, so it could be worth checking that out.
2. Make a plan

How much are you willing to save? And how much pocket money do you think you’ll need for this trip? You’ll have to think about what your plans are when you arrive to Vietnam. If you’re only planning on staying in one place for example, then your trip will be a lot cheaper. But if you want to travel around the country, do activities and tours, you’ll find that your trip will be much more expensive. So make a plan, try to set a goal and you’ll find it much easier to save your money.
3. Watch what you’re spending on
Once you get your paycheck, it’s normal that you want to splurge, buy those new clothes and go out and have dinner. But if you’re serious about saving up for a trip, you have to be a bit more disciplined with your money. Instead of going out for dinner all the time, why not have home cooked meals instead? And instead of buying new clothes, try to save that money instead. Think of all the fun things you could be doing instead of having a new top. That might give you a bit more perspective so it’ll be easier for you to save. And if you’re going to the gym, why not go for runs outside instead and work out at home? There are several tutorial videos online. Just small steps like this will ensure that you’ll be able to save enough money for your travels.
4. Open a savings account
Automatically transfer money into your savings account and make sure you stay away from it. This will help you save, because if you can’t see the money in your current account, you won’t be able to spend it.
5. Do free things
You don’t have to spend money to have fun. Almost every town or city has tons of free things to do, you just have to look for them. This might even make you fall in love with your city all over again when you find new things to do.
6. Don’t make partying a priority
If you’re a big party-goer, it might be difficult to let this one go. But you can start by reducing your party habits by half and you’ll be shocked to see how much money you’ll be left with end of the month. When you go partying, it’s usually not just the alcohol that costs money. Take into consideration food, transportation expenses, and perhaps you have to pay entrance to the club. That’s at least 30-50 USD. Add alcohol expenses as well and it’ll be even more.
7. Always remind yourself of your goal
There will be times when it’ll be hard for you to save. You’ll see your friends buying Starbucks everyday, going clubbing, hitting the gym and buying all these new clothes. And you’re working your butt off with two jobs so you can buy that flight ticket. But in these times, it’s important to always remind yourself about why you’re saving and why it’ll be so worth it in the end. Because traveling is so much more than just money – it’s about experiencing a new culture, new landscapes, meeting people from all over the world, discovering new things about yourself, tasting new flavors, learning how to be more independent, and fulfilling a dream that you’ve had for a long time. So, is it really worth all the hassle just to travel? The answer will always be yes.
Before you arrive to Vietnam, remember to apply for a visa in order to enter the country. The visa fee costs about 25 USD, or more, depending on the type of visa you’re applying to. There are three types of visas: Visa on Arrival, E-Visa, or go to the Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate and apply with them. Travelers typically prefer the online visas, but if you’re arriving to Vietnam by land, you must apply via the Vietnamese Embassy.
