A Guide to the Stunning Diep Son Island

Vietnam’s stunning Diep Son Island is fast gaining popularity, thanks to its long sweep of white sands and crystal clear waters. The island is home to three different small islands connected to each other by a sand bridge. Located in Vietnam’s Nha Trang province, the picturesque Diep Son Island is a great place for swimming, snorkeling, and simply relaxing. So if you’re looking for a great place to relax and unwind during your trip to Vietnam, the Diep Son Island is the perfect spot for this.

An Overview of the Diep Son Island

Diep Son Island is famous for its breathtaking sandbar that stretches across the sea. It’s located in Van Phong Bay, around 60 km. away from Nha Trang. The water in the island remains shallow for most of the year, making it a great spot for swimming. Despite the increasing number of tourist visits, the island remains untouched. Unlike the other coastal islands in Vietnam, Diep Son is not marred by development, although this could change soon.

Every day, electricity on the island is only available from 6 PM to 9 PM and is provided by a generator. In the afternoon, boats can be seen arriving carrying people from the nearby village that have come to collect the day’s fishing harvest.

How to Reach Diep Son Island

To reach Diep Son, you must first travel to the city of Nha Trang. The best way to reach Nha Trang is by flying from either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh. You can also travel by train to Nha Trang coming from the major cities of Vietnam, although this could take a while depending on where you’re coming from.

From Nha Trang, you need to travel to Van Gia, a small filling village in the Hung Thang Commune. You can either rent a car or take the public bus for this one-hour journey. Upon arriving at Van Gia, you need to ride a boat that will take you to Diep Son Island. There are two kinds of boats that you can take from Van Gia waterfront going to Diep Son, the fast-speed boats and the wooden boats. The fast speed boats will take only 10 – 15 min, while the wooden boats could take up to 45 minutes! Understandably, the fast-speed boats are generally more expensive than the slower wooden boats.

What to Explore In Diep Son Island

Most of the boats that travel to Diep Son will moor at a pier that locals call Hon Bip. There’s not much infrastructure on the island just yet, but there are plenty of activities that visitors can take part in. There are palm-thatched restaurants in the area that serve decent and affordable meals including delicious and affordable seafood.

Tourists can take part in various water sports activities, such as jet skiing, snorkeling, fishing, and kayaking. Sunbathing at the sandbar is also a popular activity for tourists in Diep Son. If you want to explore nature, walk through the island to explore the lush green forest and rocky mountain. Near the coastline, there are a wide variety of trees and shrubs, such as mango trees, cherry trees, eucalyptus, cacti and more!

When Is the Best Time to Visit Diep Son Island?

The best time to visit Diep Son Island is between the months of December and June. It is during these months that the sea remains shallow and calm, which is a great time to explore the sandbar. This is also the perfect time to go kayaking since the water is calm.

If you’re planning to visit Diep Son Island during your trip to Vietnam, you should allocate at least a couple of days for your visit especially since it requires a bit of time to get to the island. One day should be enough to explore the island and take part in water sports activities.

There are no hotels or lodging on the island. If you are up for some adventure, you can sleep in a tent, which makes for a truly exciting experience because electricity is only until 9 PM. You can bring your own light or build a campfire when nighttime comes. There are also some boat operators that offer bamboo hut along the bay where you can sleep. But these huts are very basic and you can rent them at very reasonable prices! In the nearby village of Van Gia, some locals are offering their houses for short stays. You can also choose to stay there if you wanted to explore Diep Son for several days!

Diep Son Island is no doubt, a truly beautiful place to visit in Vietnam and a great place to experience nature at its best. Staying overnight on a tent can make for a truly wonderful experience. Just imagine yourself lying in the sand while watching the stars shining above!
